| EU is funding forced abortion and sterilisation |

From ALIVE, 6 November 2006. In 1994, the UN sponsored an International Conference on Population & Development which took place in Cairo. The conference agreed that coercive abortion and forced sterilisation should be prohibited. Kathy Sinnott MEP reports that, despite this, these practices are commonly used in China and Vietnam for the purposes of population control. She explains that EU development funds are currently going to programmes which include coercive abortion and forced sterilisation. A number of amendments were tabled in the European Parliament this week to exclude EU funding for such brutal and inhuman activities. Recently the majority of Irish MEPs voted against funding for destructive research on human embryos. Hopefully they will also recognise that the EU can promote human rights by refusing to fund coercive abortion and forced sterilisation. Will you encourage them? |
