The Court of Appeal on 8th April 2003 overturned a ban on the HFEA issuing a licence for human tissue typing following pre-implantation genetic diagnosis in order to treat 4 year-old thalassaemia sufferer Zaim Hashmi. The House of Lords later confirmed the decision. "Josephine Quintavalle of Comment on Reproductive Ethics, the group that brought the original legal challenge, insisted that 'designing another child as a therapeutic commodity, as a tissue bank, is definitely not an ethical cure.'"
