IVF Babies' Health PDF Print E-mail

"The first study into the health risks faced by the 68,000 children conceived in Britain as the result of fertility treatment has been ordered after growing concern about the babies' long-term health," The Times reported on 22 Oct 2002 "...... The Medical Research Council and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) are to carry out the investigation.

"Lord Winston, Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College School of Medicine, told The Independent that his laboratory at the Hammersmith Hospital in London planned to publish evidence that freezing embryos interrupted the normal 'expression' or activity of vital genes."

John Smeaton, (SPUC News, 25 July 03) noted: "For every live birth, more than 20 embryos will perish. Since IVF was legalised in Britain in 1991, some 1.2 million babies have been discarded or frozen, died during pregnancy or failed to survive freezing."
